I have a few servers running Ubuntu 24.04 and LXD for virtualization.
When I first set things up the recommendations I found were to use either BTRFS or ZFS for the data pool. Well, I already had some btrfs experience and it was the default listed when I first ran lxd init for the data pool so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I ran LXC containers of minimal Ubuntu and had a few MySQL databases running. And the IOPS seemed fine, but then after some time the host showed kernel interrupts resetting the NVMe controller. Well 💩 Maybe the drive is just going bad?

Because I’m never gonna remember this… and maybe it could help others since I couldn’t seem to find it anywhere…

I have four data centers each with a server running an instance of cloudflared so we don’t have to deal with port forwarding.

Each site’s services are basically identical:

reverse proxy (nginx)
database
application servers

Lets say the domain is example.com, I chose srv1.example.com, srv2.example.com, srv3.example.com, srv4.example.com to point back to the individual servers. So I used the docs to create the tunnels. All healthy!

I have a list of about 100K emails. Before I just start sending them off I wanted to check if they are valid. I decided to check their domain names to see if they have MX records at all.

Here is the usage example:

# Usage:

# Examples:
#   ./checkmx.sh domains.txt
#   ./checkmx.sh -p 10 @8.8.8.8 domains.txt
#   cat domains.txt | ./checkmx.sh @1.1.1.1

Now I was an idiot and forgot to point it at 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 so my name server was the first hop… but it riped through about 20k domains in a few mins.

I got some databases I need to migrate from one server to another. We opted for the good old fashion `mysqldump`

So far it is wicked slow to import one of the tables, while working through the solution I needed to transform the data from the dump format of insert statements per line to a csv file. Yeah, I could have just done the export again into this new format but why bother with all that and the network egress fees again, lets just transform what we have.

The solution for getting a keychain prompt when using ssh and keys with your ssh config file using “identitiesonly yes”:

Make sure you have a corresponding id_rsa.pub or id_dsa.pub in your ~/.ssh directory.

When I had an id_rsa but not a corresponding id_rsa.pub, Mac OS X kept popping up the dialog and remember passowrd in my keychain did nothing.

Using find we can query a storage volume and open permissions (or change permissions to other permissions) to ease permissions issues in a heterogeneous environment.

The “old” way to open all the permissions in the volume /media/volB is to run a chmod recursively on all the files in the directory:

iCloud’s Photostream feature is neat. All the photographs and screen grabs I take with my iPhone or iPad are shared between the devices automatically. But getting to them on the Mac is more complicated, and if you’re approaching it from a pure product perspective it appears that you have no choice but to use iPhoto or Aperture to get to the images on a Mac. Turns out this isn’t true. I just used this method to create a file MD5 “on the fly” meaning, one read operation when moving the file to a destination.

GNU screen gives a server admin the ability to connect to a multi-user terminal/shell or just a persistent shell session that can be disconnected from and re connected to later without interrupting the commands being run. Lets say I am going to parse a bunch of files looking for duplicates and I’m working on bonding a few NICs together for additional functionality, and I have a little loop running to monitor uptime on a switch, etc, etc, all within a network I access through a ssh server. I connect and launch screen session and use a bunch of screen windows (or multiple session) to manage all those tasks… then, when I’m heading home and want to pick it all up once I’m there, I disconnect before I leave and reconnect to that same screen session(s) later as if I never left!

rsync is a cool little app that has been around for ages, it allows you to copy stuff from one system to another using ssh.
rsync -avhPn --del -e 'ssh -p xxxxx' --exclude 'Dir_of_BigFiles' ~/Personal/ user@remote_host:Personal/
the -n means “dry-run” so it pretends to copy stuff but doesn’t. -a means archive (most likely what you want for files like personal photos), -v for verbose incase something goes wrong, -h for human readable sizes, -P for progress, and –del for delete stuff on the destination that is not on the source (so be careful with paths, hence -n).
Note: the --exclude directories are paths relative to the files being moved, not from where you execute the command.

ssh is one of the best nerd tools around! I use it for connecting to my home when on the road and as a poor mans vpn to my home for web browsing:

ssh -DN 8080 user@host -p xxxxx
The -D dynamically links the local port 8080 (this is on my laptop) through ssh to the host (my home server). The I configure my browser to use a SOCKS proxy on 8080 and BLAM, I’m on my local network surfing the internet or any other web based service I have at my home (XBMC, DD-WRT, development web pages, etc)
The -N means don’t bother giving me an interactive shell, meaning, the terminal prompt on my laptop can’t use the ssh connection through the terminal (ie, although I have an ssh connection open I can’t do normal ssh stuff through this window) which is nice because it keeps the tunnel from closing because of a time-out.
